Doug slept like a baby and rose like a glorious king.

Life was at its best when shared with your other half, he had recently found out.

And beds were a lot more comfortable after a stay in Ultra Hell's prison.

All that was to say— where Freya was understandable tense, Doug was very much not as the doors leading into the emergency ward swung open, revealing the refreshed looking young man.

"Good day, Ms. Morningstar!" He chirped, holding his clipnote against his shoulder as he grinned at her. "Ready? Cuz I sure am. Follow me!"

He half turned with military precision, a marching soldier with far too much pep in his step as he led her towards the surgery room.

Well, at least his confidence couldn't be questioned.

He loved his job— it was the only one he had chosen with full understanding of the implications, after all. He didn't regret helping Hideo Kino, but he did regret thinking he needed to join the military to do so.

"Even people like me can get real lucky, Freya." Doug said— nay, hummed, discarding formalities. "Life's troubles are a lot easier to carry with two pairs of hands."

With any luck, he wasn't joining the ranks of people banging coworkers.

"I know. Thanks!" He said cheerily, clearly aware of his fortune, and somehow not noticing the stiffness of her words.

Utterly blind to the depths of the gutters Freya's mind mired in.

At her question, he pursed his lips, hand reaching up to cup at his chin.

"Do you...?" He asked right back, before something flashed behind his eyes.

The memory of a burning station and shadowy bastards came to him, his brow upturning briefly before he smiled again.

"Oh yeah, you do." He said, scratching at his cheek. "I don't think you mad a great first impression though, she seemed scared of you."

He glanced her way, cocking his head.

"Do you recall Yuina?" He hoped he wasn't stepping past some boundary by bringing it up... he wanted to mend singed bridges, if possible.

Hopefully Yuina Higashi wouldn't mind.

Doug smiled brightly at the sudden praise, a light dusting of blush crossing his cheeks.

"Right? She's great. She's really strong, even if she doesn't think so." He said as they reached a pair of double doors. He stopped before them, his palms pressing against them.

His smile slowly slid off, his brow twisting slightly.

"Yeah. I'm looking after her." He said, tone oddly serious.

Yes, he very much knew she was being hunted.

He had introduced the ninjas that had attempted it before him to the fucking soil.

"You ready?" He asked suddenly, gaze facing the doors. "Surgery room is up ahead."

"Don't even know where she is." He said dryly, tipping his hat at the councilwoman and grinning. "Have some faith, love. No nurse Lele's today."

Not on his behalf, at any rate.

Turning his gaze towards Lyunne, he nodded at the dragon, before opening the double doors and standing aside.

"After ya, big guy." He said, gesturing inside before turning a winking face to Freya. "We'll be gone for a couple hours."

Just letting her know. She was free to take a seat at nearby bench... or go get a coffee, whatever helped her with her nerves.
